It’s easy to think that the grass is greener when being lured into a new role with the invitation of more money, better benefits and exposure to more challenging tasks. This often makes it hard for us to separate logic from reason to know if moving is the right decision and if the new company is a good fit for your skills. This presentation will walk you through how to rationalise the decision-making process so you come to a conclusion that is in the best interests of your career longevity.

      Key takeaways:

    • Getting back to the basics - what exactly are you looking for in a role once you remove salary & benefits?
    • Awareness of the importance of a third party opinion - how to take advice from a colleague, mentor or manager
    • Advice on what questions to ask to ensure you have a comprehensive understanding of the new role and company
    • The importance of comparing a new role to what else is out there - & not just your current role!

Reports suggest that the amount of women studying computer science-related degrees is becoming more balanced with the amount of men studying similar courses. Yet, statistics show that only 25% of tech jobs in South Africa are held by women. The conclusion we must take from this is that there is an inherent problem with attracting and retaining females in technology roles despite being qualified for the job in hand. This workshop will explore the fundamental question of where the responsibility lies in breaking down barriers in tech to create a more harmonious industry to boost female participation.

    Key takeaways:

  • Whose problem is it – identifying where the responsibility lies
  • Analysing the impact of maternity leave - how can maternity benefits be improved, how can we overcome discrimination surrounding it and how the legislation can be better implemented?
  • The importance of incorporating flexible working policies in retaining females in tech roles
  • A review of the impact exposure to continuous training can offer in keeping females engaged in the industry
  • Compare what milestones have been achieved globally that can be duplicated to the African market

Since 1998, The Employment Equity Act has been tasked with achieving equity in the workplace. Whilst in many ways businesses compliance to the legislation promotes a more diverse workforce it does mean in certain cases business leaders are unable to hire their first choice candidates into open job roles. Join this open conversation to address whether businesses have to suffer at the hands of diversity quotas for society to do better.

    Key takeaways:

  • Delving into the societal impact of diversity quotas - are they achieving what they set out to do?
  • What is the impact on businesses from positive discrimination, both good and bad?
  • What alternatives must we consider as viable solutions to establishing employment equity in South Africa
